U.S. Rep. Courtney Will Attend Madison Forum on School Violence

Last month I had the distinct opportunity to work with our secondary students in supporting a remarkable student-driven event on March 14 in an effort to amplify their voices in demanding an end to the unspeakable episodes of school violence across the nation.

As I stated last month, I could not be more proud of our student body. As they planned their events, I made a commitment to our students. I committed to continue to find ways to get their voices heard beyond the borders of our campus.

I am proud to inform the school community that, due to this commitment, Daniel Hand High School will be hosting a town hall event with U.S. Congressional Representative Joseph Courtney on Wednesday May 2 at 5:00 PM in the DHHS Dining and Assembly Hall. Congressman Courtney is most interested in hearing the voices of our students, and our students are most interested in being heard!! In addition, we have invited area high schools to join us so that the collective voices of this generation are heard.

In my humble opinion, too many adults are underestimating this generation. They are passionate about making a real difference, socially aware of the challenges of the world they will be entering as young adults, and they have potent access to messaging like no generation that preceded them through social media, and the ubiquity of access points through the web.

This is a community event and community members are free to join us, however, I want to emphasize that our primary participants are our students. If you look closely enough, you'll see they are leading the way.
