MADISON, CT – One of the things that makes Madison a special town is its beautiful beaches. At its most recent Board of Selectmen meeting, the selectmen heard a concerning report from Beach and Recreation Director Scot Erskine that sand is slowly disappearing from the Surf Club beach.

The Surf Club Beach has about 1,200 feet of sandy beachfront on Long Island Sound. Erskine stated that at one point in the spring the sand was low but with the rising currents and tides over the last 20 years “our beaches are getting smaller.”

Erskine said the good news is the Surf Club still has plenty of sand, but said he did add he is looking into the permitting process to replenish sand if necessary.

He said the replenishing process may and require the Army Corps of Engineers and the possibility of dredging.

For now, Erskine is recommending a wait and see approach. First Selectman Tom Banisch asked about other beaches. Erskine stated other beaches are fine.
