MANCHESTER, CT — The Manchester Water and Sewer Department has begun a comprehensive acoustic leak detection survey of its water distribution system as part of an effort to identify hidden leaks before they develop into emergency water main breaks.
The town is partnering with M.E. Simpson Co., Inc., a technical services firm specializing in water loss control and water distribution system management, to conduct the survey throughout the summer.
Crews will inspect water mains, fire hydrants and selected service points using electronic listening devices and computerized leak correlators. The non-invasive technology allows workers to locate and assess underground leaks without excavation, enabling the town to prioritize repairs and infrastructure replacement projects.
Town officials said the program is intended to reduce water loss, protect surrounding infrastructure, lower the likelihood of costly emergency repairs, and improve the reliability and efficiency of the water distribution system.
Residents are asked to use caution when traveling near survey crews, who may be working along roadsides while conducting inspections. Motorists should watch for marked M.E. Simpson vehicles and personnel and provide crews with adequate space.
