MANCHESTER, CT — Three people have been arrested following a lengthy investigation into a June pedestrian collision that killed 4-year-old Akari Cortes, Manchester police said Friday.
According to an incident report, a 49-year-old Manchester man was operating a motor vehicle westbound on East Center Street on June 10, and it struck a 4-year-old from Manchester, lagter identified as Akari.
It took place at 4:36 a.m. in the area of 375 East Center St., police said.
Police officers and the Manchester Fire Department arrived at the scene and immediately initiated life-saving measures, according to an incident report. Akari was transported to Connecticut Children's Medical Center, where she succumbed to her injuries, police said.
Tarequl Ambia, 49, of Manchester, who police identified as the driver of the vehicle involved in the June 10 collision, was arrested and charged with five offenses.
Ambia was charged with misconduct with a motor vehicle, reckless driving, operating a motor vehicle while using a hand-held telephone or mobile electronic device, third offense, failure to obey a traffic control signal and failure to drive right, according to police.
He posted a $50,000 surety bond and is scheduled to appear in Manchester Superior Court on Sept. 4.
As part of the investigation, police also arrested Akari's parents, Taylor Biron, 28, and Nathael Cortes, 26, both of Manchester.
Biron and Cortes were each charged with risk of injury to a child. Each posted a $25,000 bond and is scheduled to appear in Manchester Superior Court on Sept. 9.
Police said they would not release additional details because the case is now pending in court.
The charges are allegations, and all three defendants are presumed innocent unless proven guilty.
