Manchester Native Named New Public Works Director

MANCHESTER, CT — Manchester native Mark Rizzo has been appointed the town's new director of public works following a competitive selection process, Town Manager Steve Stephanou announced Wednesday.

Rizzo has more than a decade of municipal leadership and infrastructure management experience. Before being appointed director, he served as the department's interim director, deputy director and field services superintendent.

Stephanou said Rizzo's background in Manchester, operational experience and leadership made him a strong choice to lead the Public Works Department.

Rizzo previously spent more than a decade with the Vernon Department of Public Works, where he served as supervisor of facilities and special projects. His responsibilities included major capital improvement programs, facility maintenance and large-scale infrastructure projects.

Before entering municipal government, Rizzo served in the U.S. Army as a squad leader. During his military service, he managed equipment and led soldiers in combat operations. He received the Bronze Star and Purple Heart for his service.

Rizzo said returning to serve the community where he grew up is an honor and that he plans to work with the Public Works staff on infrastructure, public safety and municipal services.

As director, Rizzo will oversee the department's multiple divisions and operations, including streets and roads, stormwater infrastructure, public buildings and grounds, fleet operations, solid waste and recycling, and capital improvement projects.
