MANCHESTER, CT — David Portnoy, the Barstool Sports founder and the "El Presidente" of pizza reviews has given a stellar grade to Mulberry Street in Manchester.
For those keeping score at home, it's an 8.2, a fine review on Portnoy's quality scale.
Mulberry Street Pizza is located at 981 Main St. in Manchester.
Portnoy and Barstool Sports were in Manchester last Thursday and at Rentschler Field the day after for the UConn-UMass football game. He and the crew stopped by Mulberry Street at 2:30 p.m. last Thursday.
He joked that he tried to review Mulberry Street about a decade ago but the mom of the current owners kept hanging up on him, thinking he was a scammer.
The review went well. Portnoy called Mulberry's pizza "similar to New Haven style," and liked the slight char on the crust.
His traditional "one bite" drew and immediate "yum" and the subsequent good score. He said 8.2 is "very good pizza" because that's on "a New Haven scale."
He reiterated his ongoing contention that "Connecticut is the best pizza state in the country ... world actually."
Portnoy even offered a history lesson — that silkworms feed on mulberry trees, fitting for Manchester's Silk City monicker.
