Connecticut's Old State House

Genealogist and historian John Mills will host the official book launch event for his debut work, The Narrative of Primus: A Lineage Woven into America’s History set to be released on April 21. The Narrative of Primus reconstructs the life of an enslaved African boy brought to colonial Connecticut and traces the generations of his descendants who fought in the Revolutionary War, the Civil War, and beyond. Through meticulous genealogical research and analysis of primary sources, Mills brings forward a story that has largely remained untold. The book can be purchased prior to the event here.
The choice of venue underscores the significance of the work. The Connecticut Old State House, one of the oldest state houses in the nation, serves as a powerful setting to reflect on the early ideals of American democracy and the individuals whose experiences were not fully represented within them.
The April 29 event will include a brief author talk, a reading, and an opportunity for attendees to engage directly with Mills and purchase signed copies of the book.

John Mills is a dedicated genealogist and president of the Alex Breanne Corporation, a Connecticut-based non-profit focused on research into the formerly enslaved. John is known for his meticulous research and deep passion for uncovering family histories. With years of experience, he has helped many individuals uncover ancestral connections. His commitment to accuracy and detail has earned him a reputation as a trusted expert in genealogical circles. His notable contributions to the field have garnered recognition, including an exposé in The Washington Post, an appearance on The Kelly Clarkson Show, and multiple interviews with famed Civil Rights attorney Areva Martin.

Funny Bone Comedy Club & Restaurant

Christopher Titus is a prolific stand-up comedian, writer, actor, and producer. As a creator, he has sold shows to NBC, ABC, FOX and Comedy Central. His wildly innovative multi-cam half hour Titus premiered to critical and audience acclaim on Fox, earning the show an Emmy nomination, while Titus himself received a WGA Award nomination for his writing. Following Titus, Christopher starred in ABC’s Big Shots, acting opposite Dylan McDermott, Michael Vartan and Josh Malina. He also starred in the NBC one-hour pilot, Future Tense and created and starred in the Bryan Cranston-directed pilot, Special Unit for Comedy Central. Through his own words from his published memoir, and the lived accounts of his descendants, come explore and elevate the narrative of a man who defined the struggle for true liberty. Born in 1790, James Mars lived the paradox of American freedom – sold as a slave in a state that claimed to be “The Land of Steady Habits.”
Keynote address by James Mars Descendent Rev. Dr. Shelley D. Best, founder of Creative Disruptor® and the author of Creative Disruption: How Artists and Innovators Build Influence, Drive Change, and Shape the Future. A Yale Divinity School–trained minister, visual artist, and social innovator, she is known for her groundbreaking work at the intersection of narrative, creativity, and leadership.

Riding high on the excitement of our 2025 ASL-infused hit, "The Rocky Horror Show," the Little Theatre of Manchester and <a href="https://www.conndeaftheatre.org/" target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener">Connecticut Deaf Theatre</a> are together again to serve up a fully accessible, ASL-infused production of the deviously delicious "LITTLE SHOP OF HORRORS."
Step into the shoes of gentle Seymour Krelborn, a hapless flower shop assistant whose luck changes when he stumbles upon a peculiar plant with a taste for blood. Dubbed "Audrey II" after his secret crush, this rapidly growing botanical oddity tempts Seymour with dreams of stardom...as long as he keeps feeding its insatiable appetite.
From the infectious rhythms of the doo-wop street chorus to the escapades of a sinister dentist, this botanical thriller bursts onto the stage in a dazzling fusion of English and American Sign Language. This cult classic sci-fi musical promises even more color, energy, and accessibility for all.
What does "ASL-infused" mean?
Everything will be signed and voiced onstage together — there's not only sign language onstage nor is it just the voiced actors onstage with interpreters supporting them. 
 
The signing will occur onstage with the actors. This is different from a "shadow cast" where the voice is primary and the ASL interpreter follows the action onstage interpreting for the voice. This show contains full accessibility onstage at all times. 
I'm Deaf - will I be able to fully understand the show?
Yes! This show is all about inclusivity and our co-directing team have worked together to ensure full access at all times for our Deaf and hard of hearing audience members. 
I'm hearing - will I be able to fully understand the show?
Yes! Everything is sung/spoken in English as well as signed. This is a unique experience that EVERYONE can appreciate and learn from. 
Is there assigned seating for accessibility?
No, we've made an effort to make sure all seats are accessible; however, if you do not need visual proximity in order to understand the show, we ask that you do not sit in the first few rows to allow for others that may.

Over 400 middle and high school Connecticut students representing an estimated 69 schools are competing on May 2 for the chance to represent their State at the National History Day Contest, being held in June at the University of Maryland. The State Contest is a culmination of months of hard work by students as they conducted historical research, analyzed their sources and created projects. Students participating in the State Contest include the winners from five regional contests held earlier this spring.
Students participate in a variety of ways: in classroom instruction, after-school clubs, as part of an enrichment program, or as an independent project. Students have spent months working on projects of their own choosing related to this year’s theme of Revolution, Reaction, and Reform in History. Students can explore any type of history, from local to international. Working alone or ingroups, students present projects in one of five categories – exhibits, documentaries, websites, papers, or performances.
The top two prize winners in each category will earn coveted spots to the National History Day competition, which will be held in Maryland in June. Third place finishers serve as alternates to the National Contest. Additionally, twenty Special Prizes related to specific topic content such as World History, Connecticut History, Social Justice, Jewish History, American Legal History and American Colonial History, will be awarded.
