Chris Powell to Retire as JI Managing Editor
Longtime newspaper editor Chris Powell is set to retire in the near-future.

MANCHESTER, CT — Longtime Journal Inquirer managing editor Chris Powell, a staunch advocate of freedom of information and a sometimes controversial columnist, has announced his retirement, effective Jan. 26.
The newspaper announced his retirement on Thursday.
Powell, 67, joined the JI upon graduating from high school in 1967. He worked in circulation but then moved to editorial as a reported and editor before moving to his corner office with a legendary IBM Selectric typewriter to run the newsroom.

He wrote a regular column and was known for going out on a limb with his opinions.
Powell is a Manchester resident and member of the Board of Directors of the Connecticut Council on Freedom of Information. He was the group's legislative chairman for several years.

He said in the JI announcement that he hopes to continue his column.
