Eastern Connecticut State University, Willimantic CT
- Displays of research and creativity dominated the Eastern Connecticut State University campus on April 12 for the annual CREATE conference. CREATE stands for "Celebrating Research Excellence and Artistic Talent at Eastern," and is the university's premier undergraduate conference. Among the conference participants were eight students from Manchester. Mark Billingsley, who majors in Sport & Leisure Management, presented "Examining PR for Frog Bridge Gymnastics." Nena Davey-Mckoy, who majors in General Studies, presented "H&M company." Joyce Figueroa, who majors in Communication and English, presented "PR Plan for Sal's Pizzeria." Hannah Hokanson, who majors in English, presented "Look How Far We've (Not) Come: Rom-Com Heroines and Shakespeare." Dana Meyer, who majors in History, presented "Connecticut Revolutionary War Deserters: An Experiment in Digital History." Steven Post, who majors in Sport & Leisure Management, presented "Public Relations plan for Shawn's Cupboard." Brian Schwager, who majors in Economics, presented "Video Streaming and the Disruption of Traditional Media." Elizabeth Tucker, who majors in Computer Science, presented "Work System Method Analysis of Kaitaia Publishing Collective." The day-long showcase featured more than 250 students from all majors who led oral and poster presentations, panel discussions, music and dance performances, art and photography exhibitions, new-media demonstrations and more.
- Forty-three students from Eastern Connecticut State University traveled to Georgia on April 11-13 to present original research at the National Conference on Undergraduate Research (NCUR). The 2019 conference occurred at Kennesaw State University and featured hundreds of undergraduate students from across the country. Among the presenters were Katherine Kolodziej of Manchester, who majors in Labor Relations/Human Resources Management and Economics, and presented a poster presentation titled "The Unique Role Of Racial Minorities And Immigrants In The Historic New England Whaling Industry," and Jane Komen of Manchester, who majors in Psychology and presented a poster presentation titled "Effects Of Mood On Short-Term Memory." Eastern students from a range of majors presented artwork, music performances and oral/poster presentations. Research questions probed topics such as the microbiome of scorpions, the link between casual sex and online dating, pop-culture glamorization of eating disorders, and much more.

- Kenneth Ogueri of Manchester was recently initiated into The Honor Society of Phi Kappa Phi, the nation's oldest and most selective all-discipline collegiate honor society. Ogueri is among approximately 30,000 students, faculty, professional staff and alumni to be initiated into Phi Kappa Phi each year. Membership is by invitation only and requires nomination and approval by a chapter. Only the top 10 percent of seniors and 7.5 percent of juniors are eligible for membership.
