From Shaking Knees to Standing Tall: My Eighth Grade Graduation Speech and Beyond

I can still feel it. The butterflies in my stomach, the clammy hands gripping the sides of the podium, my knees knocking ever so slightly under my graduation robe. I was just thirteen years old, and as class president of my eighth-grade class, I had the honor—and absolute terror—of delivering our graduation speech.

My voice cracked halfway through my first sentence. I paused, heart pounding, eyes scanning the gymnasium packed with classmates, families, and teachers. I was so nervous I could barely catch my breath. But somehow, I pushed forward. Word by word, sentence by sentence, I found my way. And while I didn’t feel confident in that moment, I was planting the seed of something that would grow stronger in me year after year.

Today, decades later, I can still hear that small voice in my head—shaky but determined—urging me to keep going, keep dreaming, and keep learning.

That eighth-grade speech wasn’t perfect, but the message I shared then still rings true: Pursue your dreams, work hard, be kind, and never stop focusing on your future.

To every graduate reading this: Graduation isn’t just the end of something—it’s the beginning of something even greater. It’s the next chapter of your story. And let me tell you, every day moving forward is a new page filled with possibility.

Your confidence will grow not because you’re never afraid, but because you choose to keep showing up. You’ll build resilience by pushing yourself to try even when you might fail. You’ll succeed not because it’s easy, but because you worked hard when no one was watching. And most importantly, you’ll build a life you’re proud of by being kind to others, and to yourself.

I didn’t become who I am today in one big leap. I grew from every challenge, every awkward moment, every time I fell and got back up. I kept learning. I kept dreaming. I kept believing there was more out there for me, and there is more out there for you, too.

So, if your knees are shaking or your voice is cracking, don’t worry. That doesn’t mean you’re not ready. It just means you care. And caring is the first step toward making a difference in your own life—and in the world.

After that unforgettable night, I stepped into high school with a new sense of purpose. Four years later, I began my journey at UConn to pursue my dream of becoming a physical therapist, and I’ve been chasing my dreams ever since.

Congratulations, graduates. You’ve earned this moment. Now chase your dreams—and remember, every experience, even the uncomfortable ones, is shaping the confident, courageous person you’re becoming.
