DEEP, Police: Manchester Man Among 2 Dead In Paddling Accident On Long Island Sound

A woman and child were also part of the paddling group.

MANCHESTER, CT - A 39-year-old Manchester man died on Long Island Sound in an accident involving a paddling group that set off from Hammonasset Beach State Park Sunday evening, authorities from Connecticut and New York said.

The body of Ferdinand Lagos, 39 of Manchester, was located in the water at 12:15 p.m. Monday, Southhold, NY police said.

One person was pronounced dead in Long Island Monday morning and two others were taken to a hospital after they were found on a beach in the Suffolk County Long Island town of Southold, N.Y., according to officials from the Connecticut Department of Energy and Evironmental Protection.

A fourth person who was apparently with the people when they set off with a kayak and a paddleboard from Hammonasset Beach State Park in Madison, sometime Sunday evening is still missing according to DEEP officials and Environmental Conservation police.

The missing person is a 44-year-old man from Manchester, authorities said.

The deceased is a 31-year old male. He was pronounced dead by Long Island authorities in Southold. The two others – an adult female and a young girl were taken to Eastern Long Island Hospital where they are being treated for hypothermia and are in stable condition, according to DEEP officials.

The woman and youngster were found on the beach early this morning after their calls were heard by a nearby resident. The deceased was located a short distance way.

EnCon Police are assisting the Southold Police Department in the investigation. There is still an ongoing search for the missing person involving the U.S. Coast Guard and multiple local fire departments, DEEP officials said.

Update, 1:41 p.m.

Southold police said that, at 3:43 a.m. an Orient, NY resident was awakened by people yelling for help from the beach in front of a residence house and called Police.

An offier then found two females on the beach suffering from hypothermia, according to a news release.

Police identiried the two as 26-year-old Delfina Reynoso and her 8-year-old daughter, Damaris Reynoso, of Hartford.

They had launched a kayak and stand-up paddleboard from Hammonasset Beach State Park with Abdias Ventura, 30, of Hartford and Ferdinand Lagos, 39 of Manchester.

Winds and tide conditions pushed the two watercraft offshore by 9 p.m. Sunday night, Southold police said.

Reynoso and her daughter landed onshore in Orient, Southold police said.

The deceased body of Ventura was located onshore about a quarter-mile west of the women, Southold police said.

The U.S. Coast Guard coordinated a search for Lagos with Southold Police, and the Cutchogue, Southold, Greenport, East Marion and Orient fire departments.

A body matching the description of Lagos was then recovered in Long Island Sound off the shore of Connecticut, according to a news release.
