“Divorce 2 Months after Purchasing a Home”

We closed a loan for this couple two months ago, at the time all SEEMED good, but this was not the case. I got a call this morning that they were getting a divorce and she was in the process of moving out. I already knew what was coming. She wanted to know how she could get her name off the mortgage.

I explained that a refinance would need to be done, but since she was the primary bread winner, it was not likely that he would qualify on his own. I won’t tell you what she said after that.

She made a sad admission, saying they thought buying a home would solve some of their marital problems. Divorce or no divorce, these folks are bound to one another until the home is either sold or the husband is able to qualify for a mortgage on his own. Maybe if she ends up paying alimony, he might be able to qualify sooner.

The moral to this story, buying a home doesn’t fix a marriage.
