Israel Independence Day
(Yom Ha’atzmaut)
The entire East of the River Jewish Community will celebrate the miracle of 64 years of Independence for the State of Israel on Wednesday night, April 25th, 7:00 PM, at Beth Sholom B’nai Israel in Manchester. The entire community, people of all religions, is invited to join the celebration at 400 East Middle Turnpike. The Israeli repertoire of the Heavy Shtetl Klezmer Band will enliven communal singing and dancing. A festive holiday service will include the participation of a joint choir composed of members of the three congregations, under the direction of Cantor Anita Shubert. A memorial honoring all those who gave their lives for the establishment of the State, all those who have died in its defense in these 64 years and all those killed in terrorist attacks, will begin the service. Rabbi Plavin said, “The reestablishment of the modern State of Israel, the only democracy in the Middle East and America’s staunchest ally, is a miracle of Biblical proportions. Israel’s survival these 64 years, despite the concerted effort of the Arab world to prevent that, is no less a miracle. Miracles in modern times deserve religious recognition just as the miracles of the Biblical period, and the return of Israel to the Jewish people in 1948 is of Biblical proportions. Israel Independence Day is an opportunity to give thanks to God for God’s kindnesses. Our fervent prayer at the service will be for Israel’s welfare and for peace and security for all people in the Middle East.”
