Man Drives into Construction Zone, Charged with DUI: Cops

HARTFORD, CT — A Manchester man is facing a pair of charges after driving into a construction zone on Interstate-84 in Friday night, state police said.

The incident involving 50-year-old Wayne Alan Smith of Manchester took place at 10:37 p.m. at a marked-off construction site on the westbound side of the highway in Hartford, state police said.

A trooper on a construction detail saw Smith drive into the coned-off area and attempted to stop him, state police said. He drove past several workers before coming to a stop inside the cones, state police said.

He then failed a series of field sobriety tests and was charged with driving under the influence and a land violation.
