MANCHESTER, CT — Manchester High School has named its top two academic graduating seniors as valedictorian and salutatorian.

Valedictorian Grace Golas and salutatorian Aine Corbett Cousins, close friends who have shared academic and extracurricular pursuits throughout high school, earned the top two academic rankings in the Class of 2026.

The pair collaborated on a science research project examining the genetic correlation between congenital heart defects and Down syndrome. Both are also members of the school's Medical Careers Academy.

“They are very good friends and share a lot of common interests,” said Christopher Garrahan, coach of the Manchester High girls golf team.

Golas, an accomplished golfer, recruited Corbett Cousins to join the team two years ago when additional players were needed. Corbett Cousins had never played golf before joining the squad. Garrahan said the friendship among the students remained strong despite differences in experience and ability.

“They support each other constantly, are always positive and upbeat with one another,” Garrahan said.

After graduation, Golas plans to attend Trinity College, where she will major in biology on a pre-med track. She said she hopes to pursue a career as either a physician assistant or pediatrician.

“My main goal is to know that whatever I do in the future is helping people and making a change for the better in our world,” Golas said.

Advanced Placement chemistry teacher Jeremy Davilla praised Golas for her dedication and character, describing her as a student who embraces challenges while remaining kind and caring.

Corbett Cousins will attend University of Rochester to study biomedical engineering. She said she hopes to earn a doctoral degree and work in research within the next decade.

Teacher Cathy Mazzotta, who taught Corbett Cousins in Advanced Placement classes for three years, called her an exceptional student and said she has grown into a confident and caring young woman.

“I am fortunate to know her and can't wait to see the great things her future holds,” Mazzotta said.
