Manchester Man Among 2 Charged With Stealing Bat, Wedding Cake Top in Tolland Break-Ins

Two men were tracked down after two incidents in Tolland on Sunday.

TOLLAND, CT — Two men broke into two Tolland homes on Sunday, but were eventually tracked down and charged with several crimes with bonds totaling $400,000, state police said.

The incidents began unraveling just after 8 a.m., state police said.

The men broke into a home on Old Stafford Road occupied at the time by a man and his daughter and stole several items, including a baseball bat, according to an arrest report. The men then used the bat to hit several items on the property, according to an arrest report.

The men then broke into an occupied home on Fernwood Road, where they took alcohol, the top of the homeowner’s wedding cake that had been in the freezer , a purse and a laptop, according to an arrest report. They were briefly confronted by a homeowner while holding the bat they stole from, the first home, state police said.

Those charged were Zachary Jurewicz, 24, of Duncaster Road, Vernon; and Eric Rawson, 26, of Henry Street, Manchester, according to an arrest report.

For the Fernwood incident, they were charged with home invasion, first-degree burglary, both fifth- and sixth-degree larceny and disorderly conduct, according to an arrest report. For the Old Stafford Road incident, they were charged with risk of injury to a child, second-degree burglary, second-degree criminal mischief, sixth-degree larceny and breach of peace, according to an arrest report.

The men fled the second residence after being confronted by the homeowner, state police said. Jurewicz was tracked down by a state police canine unit and Rawson was located by an Ellington officer who went to the scene to assist with a perimeter search, according to an arrest report.

They both were to appear in court Monday.
