Manchester Obituary: Rita Smith, 96

Rita E. (Stannehl) Smith, 96, of Manchester, peacefully passed away on Friday, May 20, 2016 at home.

She was born on February 19, 1920 in Manchester, daughter of the late John R. and Anna L. (O'Connell) Stannehl. Rita attended local schools, was a graduate of Manchester High School, Class of 1938 and had been a lifelong resident. Rita was employed for over 30 years with the D&L Store in the Manchester Parkade retiring in 1993 as a Department Manager. She was and avid cook and a voracious reader.

Rita is survived by her two daughters; Cheryl Duncan of Manchester with whom she made her home and Lucille Hayes also of Manchester, her son; Stephen Smith and his wife Py of Tucson, AZ, her daughter-in-law Bobby Jean Smith of Manchester, eight grandchildren, fourteen great-grandchildren and seven great-great grandchildren.

At her request there will be no funeral services. Burial will be private in St. James Cemetery, Manchester.

Memorial contributions may be made to the St. Jude Children's Research Hospital.
