MANCHESTER, CT — Manchester police on Tuesday sent an open letter to the community in regard to the coronavirus pandemic and the recent death of a Minnesota man while in police custody.

Here is is:

A message from Chief William Darby and the Men and Women of the Manchester Police Department:
While our nation is recovering from the unprecedented pandemic as a result of COVID-19, we have been further shaken by the death of George Floyd. The events that led to his death were characterized by a blatant disregard for human life and a betrayal of the oath to protect and serve.
The failure of other officers involved to intervene is not what we expect from those who protect and serve our communities. It is the responsibility of each and every officer to ensure the safety and security of the public.
So many law enforcement officers go to work each day and do the right thing. The actions of a few are not representative of the many. Every day, the officers of the Manchester Police Department strive to conduct themselves with integrity, compassion and fairness. We understand that the actions we take must continue to build the community's trust in their law enforcement organization.
The death of George Floyd has rippled through our nation, and the impact of the unrest created by this event has been devastating. Many communities and law enforcement organizations have experienced violence and destruction in the wake of protests. Our community, however, has come together to provide a safe and open platform for those who want to be heard.
Yesterday, members of our community came together peacefully and in solidarity in a Rally for Racial Justice. Our officers were present to ensure public safety and protect the rights of those who participated. The Manchester Police Department will continue to ensure the safety of those that want to have their voices heard and the ability for peaceful demonstrations to take place in our community.
We wear a uniform and a badge, but we are all human beings. We have families, loved ones, and we are a part of this community. Together we stand to engage in conversation and institute changes to make our community safer. We understand that there are some individuals who do not belong in a position of public trust and must be held accountable for their actions. Our department will continue to build and maintain public trust for the officers of the Manchester Police Department and law enforcement officers across the nation. It is only through a partnership with the community that we accomplish the mission of public safety entrusted in us.
