MCC Precision Manufacturing Students Receive Haas Grant

MANCHESTER, CT — Six Manchester Community College Precision Manufacturing students have been awarded scholarships, thanks to a $15,000 grant from the Gene Haas Foundation.

The scholarships, based on merit, were presented to Jeff Anderson, of New Hartford; Dipak Lama, of Plainville; Christina Ritchie, of Cheshire; Jeremy Rogoz, of Coventry; and Brendan Ward and Megan Walsh, both of Vernon.

Scholarship funds are for tuition, books and supplies that students are required to provide, such as personal tooling.

The Gene Haas Foundation was formed in 1999 with the primary goal of building skills in the machining industry. The foundation provides an opportunity for schools to apply for funds annually, providing scholarships for computer numerical control machine technology students and National Institute for Metalworking Skills credentials.

The Gene Haas Foundation has contributed more than $60 million since 2014 supporting education throughout the world.

"We're fortunate to have an amazing partner in Manchester Community College. The college is working daily to help close the skills gap in Connecticut," said Toni Neary, director of education for Haas Factory Outlet Trident. "Local manufacturers need skilled machinists in order to keep manufacturing here at home, and these scholarships remove barriers for students, allowing them to complete the program."

Precision manufacturing certification equips students with the necessary hands-on experience and foundational knowledge to qualify for entry-level positions as machine operators and quality control inspectors. In the program, students are taught both conventional machining techniques and CNC machining techniques. Students who complete the program earn nationally recognized credentials and a 38-credit certificate that can be applied toward an associate degree in Technology Studies-Industrial Technology Option.
