Newest Lutz Museum Display Honors Legacy Of Girl Scouts

The latest display at Manchester's Lutz Children's Museum honors an iconic American institution.

MANCHESTER, CT — The latest display at the Lutz Children's Museum in Manchester pays tribute to an American institution — the Girl Scouts.

The display, entitled, "Girl Scout Uniforms," is a collection of vintage Girl Scout memorabilia that includes badges, pins, and books from 1919 thru 1970. The collection went on public display Aug. 1 and his highlighted by a vintage 1919-1920 Girl Scout uniform donated by Carolyn Mann of nearby Brooklyn in eastern Connecticut.

Display cases regularly change at the Lutz Children's Museum because museum founder Hazel Lutz had a vision of, "a whole museum of artifacts and realities on which to draw inspiration."

One special feature are the khaki badges such as dancer, drummer, and first aid that served as the predecessors to the modern, multi-colored proficiency badges.

"The collection is a true treat for any person wishing to see how Girls Scouts have evolved over time," LUtz Collections Curator Brian Colebath said. "Mrs. Lutz was a constant traveler and collector, bringing back many interesting artifacts from all over the world these artifacts were used for teaching children at the museum and in the Manchester school system, an approach still used today."
