Open Call to Artists: New Juried Show, "FLIGHT" at MCC on Main

Enter your artwork for a chance to win cash prizes!

The Dehn Gallery at MCC on Main invites artists to submit work for a Spring/Summer exhibition. What is FLIGHT? Your work can touch upon several definitions of the word FLIGHT. Your work may include images of flying such as birds, planes, insects, drones etc; or flight as a term for fleeing; or flight as in tasting portions of a beverage; or a swift passage of time; or a group of creatures or objects flying together; an extravagant or far-fetched idea or account as in flights of fancy… Take a look at dictionary definitions and take off on FLIGHT.

Eligibility:

  • This is an open call for primarily two-dimensional artists who are at least 16 years of age.
  • All work must be original and by the submitting artist.
  • Media accepted: Photography, mixed media, drawings, paintings, books, collages, prints, relief sculptures that hang on the wall, small sculptures (space is limited for 3-dimensional work).
  • Size should not exceed 4ft x 6ft in any direction.
  • Work must be ready to hang.
  • All work must be available for sale (65% to artist, 35% commission to Dehn Gallery to benefit arts programming)

Cash Prizes:
First Place: $250
Second Place: $200
Third Place: $100
Local Hero (CT artists only): $100

Jurors:
Neil Daigle Orians is the Visual Arts Coordinator at Real Art Ways in Hartford, CT. Orians is an interdisciplinary artist born outside Chicago, raised in Nebraska, and currently living and working outside of Hartford, Connecticut. He received his BFA from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln and MFA from the University of Connecticut. He has shown nationally and internationally, including the Czong Institute for Contemporary Art in Korea, Kai Lin Art in Atlanta, GA, and Sideshow Gallery in Brooklyn, NY.

David Borawski is an Independent Curator organizing exhibitions at Real Art Ways, The Institute Library, Atom Space, Charter Oak Cultural Center, The Dirt Salon and other galleries. Borawski is an installation artist who has shown his work at the New Britain Museum of American Art, The Housatonic Museum, Marymount Manhattan College among other galleries throughout New England and in Poland.

Jane Rainwater is the Curator of the Dehn Gallery at MCC on Main in Manchester, CT. Rainwater holds a BFA from the Hartford Art School and a MFA from Lesley College of Art and Design. Rainwater is an exhibiting artist, designer and educator.

Judging Criteria:
Originality and interpretation of theme, quality, demonstration of ability, and usage of medium. Images should be clear and in focus - this represents your work and it will be displayed/ judged the same way it is received. Submitted images should not have any borders or watermarks.

Entry Fee:
$30 for up to three images maximum. Pay at: www.flightjuriedshow.eventbrite.com

Key Dates:
Entries due by Midnight: April 30th
Accepted Work Drop off: May 14
Artists Reception and Opening: May 19
Pick Up of work: August 27
Please do not enter if you are unable to drop off/pick up your work on the specified date.

Submission Instructions:
· Submit your entry fee at the Eventbrite page: www.flightjuriedshow.eventbrite.com
· Download the FLIGHT entry form, and email completed entry form and attachment of up to 3 images to flightjuriedshow@gmail.com. Write “FLIGHT Entry” in the subject line.
· Format the jpegs as 300dpi, maximum 1.000px in any dimension, not to exceed 2MB, one
image per piece, no detail shots.
· Name the files as shown: lastnamefirstinitial001.jpg, (example: smithJ001.jpg) second image:
002, third: 003
· We cannot accept slides or CDs. Unpaid or incorrectly formatted entries will not be considered.

Shipping to and from the gallery is the responsibility of the artist. Accepted artwork will be insured for the sale price while in the Dehn Gallery. Insurance for Artwork in transit is the responsibility of the artist.
