One of the strangest calls I have ever gotten. Mike called to introduce himself and told me that he was talking to a Realtor partner of mine who told him, he has been getting referrals from me for the past five years and that he has been referring mortgage business to me as well. Not sure why, but I was surprised this information was shared, but what do I know.
He wanted to know how he could get in on the actions and then the kicker, how much would he have to pay for each referral. I told him, he couldn’t afford my referrals. I immediately knew, this was not someone I could work with. I explained to him that it was illegal for me to charge for any referral. He then asked, OK so what is the catch? It’s simple I explained, that the referral partner that I give some of my referrals is trusted and I can count on him taking the utmost care of each client I sent his way.
Mike told me the two of them were having a conversation about how each other’s business was doing. Mike was not very busy this year and my referral partner seemed to be doing well. I explained there was a difference between prospecting and building relationships. I asked Mike if he has ever gotten a referral from a mortgage broker. He told me he couldn’t remember. I told him, there is no better time to start business relationships and then said our goodbyes.
