Rep. Tweedie Votes for Better Service Delivery for Individuals with Intellectual/Developmental Disabilities

Co-sponsored bill to develop a state-wide comprehensive residential waiting list

HARTFORD – State Representative Mark Tweedie (R-13) co-sponsored a bill that was approved unanimously in the House this past week and takes a significant step for the State of Connecticut in regards to some of our most critical social services.

S.B. 246 will ensure better service for persons with intellectual and developmental disabilities (I/DD) by developing a state-wide comprehensive residential waiting list maintained, and updated quarterly, by the Department of Developmental Services (DDS) Commissioner.

The bill, which is now in concurrence with the Senate and awaiting a signature from the governor to be adopted into law, requires DDS to provide accurate and up-to-date information on family needs regarding the Residential Waiting List and other services by requiring a yearly census conducted when families meet with DDS for their annual review. By July 2018, DDS must develop five and 10 year plans for each individual with an intellectual disability and is eligible for DDS services.

“This legislation will give so many families of relatives with I/DD peace of mind that their loved ones will be taken care of,” said Rep. Tweedie. “It’s a step forward that is long over-due, but I am happy that we can implement this level of organization now.”

The 2017 regular legislative session will adjourn by midnight tomorrow, Wednesday, June 7th. Follow Rep. Tweedie’s legislative activity on his website, www.reptweedie.com or his Facebook page, www.facebook.com/reptweedie.
