MANCHESTER, CT — Automated speed enforcement equipment will be deployed on Interstate 384 during road maintenance operations beginning the week of Oct. 18, according to an announcement from Connecticut transportation officials.

The mobile Automated Work Zone Speed Control equipment is expected to be used for approximately two weeks to help enforce speed limits in work zones along the highway, which runs through Manchester and connects the town with the Hartford area and eastern Connecticut.

The cameras activate when a vehicle travels at least 10 mph above the posted work zone speed limit. Each recorded violation must be manually verified by a sworn Connecticut State Police officer before a notice is issued.

Drivers caught speeding 10 mph or more above the posted limit for the first time will receive a written warning. A second or subsequent offense within one year carries a $75 fine.

Vehicles traveling at 85 mph or faster will receive an immediate $75 fine, bypassing the warning for a first offense.

Notices of liability will be mailed to the registered owner of the vehicle. The violations do not add points to a driver's license or affect insurance records as moving violations, according to the announcement.

Motorists traveling through I-384 work zones should follow posted speed limits and watch for maintenance crews.
