Walmart Testing a 'No-Waiting' App at Manchester Store
A new app allows customers to scan items as they shop in-store and skip the checkout line.

MANCHESTER, CT — Walmart officials are testing some cutting-edge technology at the Manchester store geared toward trimming the wait time in checkout lines and the store in general.
It's Walmart’s new Scan & Go feature, which allows customers to scan items as they shop in-store and skip the checkout line.
“We know speed and convenience are important to our customers, whether they’re shopping in our stores or online – so we’re always looking for new ways to save them time,” store manager Yetsenia Eshoo said. “In addition to saving time, Scan & Go also gives customers the chance to check prices and see their totals as they shop, which lets them stay on budget. We’re excited to be one of the first Walmart stores in our area to offer this innovative service and we’re looking forward to continuing to make our store as convenient as possible for our customers.”

- Download the Scan & Go app onto a mobile phone and open the app inside Walmart, or use the devices available in store.
- Scan the bar code of each item and then place the item into the shopping cart. Items with no visible bar code can be looked with a “Find an Item” option.
- A running total of the items in the cart will be kept.
- Check out and pay in the app.
- The receipt can be shown to an associate on the way out.
The app is part of an $11 billion investment in 2017 and 2018 geared toward store growth, store remodels and "other innovations," Walmart officials said.
“We’re focused on this next phase of this test. Ultimately, it’ll be our associates and customers who decide the future of Scan & Go.” Phil Keene, Walmart's director of corporate communications.

The program was unveiled last week in Manchester. It is similar to that being used at Sam's Club outlets, Walmart officials said. The Manchester store is the only one in Connecticut to feature the Scan & Go option, officials said.
