MANCHESTER, CT — The winter sports campaign is officially upon us as practice is scheduled to open Monday for high school wrestling, girls basketball and ice hockey teams throughout Connecticut. Indoor track, boys basketball, boys swimming and gymnastics all begin practice Thursday.

With players slated to take the court, ice and mat later this afternoon, dreams of a state championship berth in March are already formulating in the minds of athletes and coaches alike.

East Catholic has won 14 team crowns in winters past, and Manchester High School has snared a dozen. Cheney Tech has never won a state title, but its predecessor, Manchester Trade, did so more than eight decades ago.
