Buyers – and sellers – need to know that sometimes the real estate sales transaction will be like a 400 meter race and other times it’ll be more the Boston Marathon. I experienced two such transactions not long ago, and both had exhilarating finishes, but getting to that end point was markedly different.
One, a short sale no less, was just like the 400 meter race. The buyer burst out of the starting blocks, hit the tough patch a little over halfway through, pushed through it, and reached the finish quickly and breathlessly. The other went on and on, slow to start like a marathon, then hitting wall after wall after wall, just as the marathon runner does. Sometimes the transaction crawled to a near-standstill, sometimes the obstacles like the Newton Hills seemed insurmountable, but then after enduring struggle after struggle, the finish line appeared and just like the 400 meter dash racer did, the marathoner sprinted to the end and arrived breathless and excited.
Real estate transactions, like sporting competitions, are not for the faint of heart or weak of goal. They require the “eye on the price,” resilience and flexibility to adapt to obstacles, a focus on the end goal, persistence – and a good coach to help the buyer or the seller get through the challenging stretches. A good real estate agent will coach his or her client to the finish, as the coach does the athlete, and the coach, though not the actual participant, will be nearly as thrilled as the participant when the goal is achieved.
