Coventry Water Tower Project Gets Big Boost From State

COVENTRY, CT — The State Bond Commission Wednesday approved $2 million for the Town of Coventry for the design and construction of a water tower.

Coventry is looking to expand its water infrastructure, which "will help support smart growth, address housing needs, and increase public safety."

About a year ago, town officials were notified by U.S. Rep. Joe Courtney that it is getting a Congressional Directed Spending grant of $1 million toward the construction of an elevated water tower to strengthen and improve the village water system.

The state grant adds to the budget.

Town officials said that the water tower would provide additional pressure and steady volume of water for the system.

"This is especially important for fire suppression systems that are needed for new commercial development and historic mill redevelopment in Coventry Village," officials said. "This project could also improve the fire suppression systems at the high school, the middle school, and GHR."

The total project is estimated to be $2.5 million, so there shouyld not be more than enough to get the project going.

The Town is coordinating with Connecticut Water Company on possible locations. The Town will be seeking professional engineering services to evaluate the sites and to see what improvements may be necessary to connect to the water system in Coventry Village.
