Recent Death Notices From Mansfield

MANSFIELD, CT — Here are the most recent death notices with Mansfield connections.

Prescott Bishop Spencer, 89, died Sept. 15. He was a longtime member of First Baptist Church of Mansfield, where he served as deacon, trustee and usher. Spencer served in the Air Force and Air National Guard's 103rd Fighter Group, the "Flying Yankees," before working at AT&T in Hartford. He is survived by three children, eight grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.

David Arthur Sonstroem, 90, died July 27. He taught literature and grammar at the University of Connecticut for more than 53 years and wrote a style guide along with several books on literature. Sonstroem was an accomplished runner who won 100 age-division road races and posted the 12th-fastest marathon time in the world for his age group in 2006. He is survived by three children, one stepchild and two grandchildren.

Thomas Frank Anderson, 79, died July 19. He served in the Navy from 1969 to 1974 as a P-3 Orion patrol aircraft pilot and commander before earning a doctorate in chemical engineering from the University of California, Berkeley. Anderson joined the University of Connecticut faculty, where he spent more than 30 years as a professor of chemical engineering, serving as department head and associate dean of the School of Engineering before retiring as professor emeritus. He is survived by his wife, Joan, three children and four grandchildren.

Joan Carolyn Nieforth, 89, died March 15. She enjoyed traveling with her late husband, Karl, on cruises and attending University of Connecticut functions, and vacationed with family at Sebago Lake in Maine. Nieforth gathered with her daughters for holidays and Sunday dinners. She is survived by two daughters, four step-children and several grandchildren.
