NEWARK, N.J. — The University of Connecticut women's basketball team will face Big East rival Seton Hall in the third annual Coretta Scott King Classic on Martin Luther King Jr. Day, Jan. 18, at Prudential Center.
The game is scheduled for 2:30 p.m. and will air on FOX.
The Coretta Scott King Classic honors the legacy of Coretta Scott King and uses basketball and community programming to promote leadership, equality, education and empowerment.
The event will include community activities and youth programming in addition to the two women's basketball games. Organizers said the programming is intended to engage local youth and highlight the values associated with King's legacy.
"Through the power of women's basketball, this event creates an opportunity to celebrate excellence while encouraging the next generation to lead with courage, purpose, and a commitment to community," said Dr. Bernice A. King, daughter of Coretta Scott King and CEO of The King Center.
UConn coach Geno Auriemma said the university is honored to participate in the event.
"This year's classic brings two great games to fans while celebrating the legacy of Coretta Scott King and her family," Auriemma said. "I think it'll be a great day of basketball and reflection, and it's an honor to be able to compete in this event."
The day's other game will feature UCLA against Oklahoma at noon.
Tickets for the Coretta Scott King Classic go on sale Oct. 2 at noon through Ticketmaster.
