Auriemma Resting After Surgery, Dailey To Coach UConn In Absence

STORRS, CT — University of Connecticut women's basketball coach Geno Auriemma underwent a "successful" surgical procedure Wednesday at UConn John Dempsey Hospital to alleviate symptoms caused by diverticulitis, athletic department officials said.

The "minimally-invasive procedure" was performed by Dr. David W. McFadden, chairman of the Department of Surgery at UConn Health and Dr. Eric Girard.

The Hall of Fame coach is "in good spirits" and is "resting comfortably," athletic department officials said.

He is expected to remain at UConn John Dempsey Hospital for the next two-to-three days and will continue to recuperate from home, officials said.

Associate head coach Chris Dailey will assume head coaching responsibilities in Auriemma’s absence.

UConn defeated DePaul 84-74 on Monday to improve to 9-0 on the season. The Huskies are back in action on Sunday, when they play Oklahoma at Mohegan Sun Arena as part of the 2019 Hall of Fame Showcase.
