STORRS, CT — University of Connecticut women's basketball coach Geno Auriemma is scheduled to undergo a "surgical procedure" on Wednesday to alleviate symptoms caused by diverticulitis, athletic department officials said.

A short stay in the hospital and quick recovery are expected, officials said. More information will be made available "as soon as is practicable," a team spokeswoman said.

No. 2-ranked UConn (9-0) is coming off a 84-74 win over No. 16 DePaul on Monday. Auriemma’s status for Sunday's game against Oklahoma at Mohegan Sun Arena has yet to be determined. The game against the Sooners is the Huskies' final 2019 contest. They are slated to resume play on Jan. 2 against Wichita State in Hartford.

If Auriemma is not available, associate head coach Chris Dailey would likely take over.

The 65-year-old Auriemma has missed only nine games during his 35-year career at UConn, including a road trip last February to Tulsa and Wichita State because of a stomach virus.

Dailey is 9-0 as a head coach.
