Some recent notable accomplishments by college students who live in Mansfield.

MANSFIELD, CT — Here are some recent notable accomplishments by local college students, as provided by readMedia Newswire.

Eastern Connecticut State University, Willimantic CT

  • The men's track and field team at Eastern Connecticut State University's recently concluded its 2018-19 indoor season. Among the student athletes were Mansfield residents Paul Barron, who majors in Accounting and participated in pole vaulting events; Matthew Pinney, who majors in Physical Education and participated in throwing events; and Jorich Swift, who majors in Health Sciences and participated in distance running events. While competing at the New England Division III Championships in Cambridge, MA, the team earned qualifications in long jump and triple jump, set personal career bests and outscored their own individual records. The outdoor season is set to begin on March 23 at Ursinus College.
  • The Theatre Program at Eastern Connecticut State University presented "The Wolves" as its first production of the spring 2019 semester. Running from Feb. 27-March 3 in the DelMonte Studio Theatre, "The Wolves" is a coming-of-age story that takes place on the turf of a local indoor soccer field. Among those who made the production a success were Mansfield residents Anthony Stigler, who majors in Sport & Leisure Management and was one of the electricians, and Lisa Wilson, who majors in Communication and was the costume designer. The play was performed by an all-female cast, directed by Theatre Professor Kristen Morgan and written by award-winning playwright Sarah DeLappe.

Emmanuel College, Boston MA

  • During the week of March 4th, Mary Pociask of Mansfield was one of 14 Emmanuel students who participated in the College's annual Alternative Spring Break (ASB) trip to Phoenix, Arizona. ASB is a week-long, faith-based service trip held during the College's traditional spring break that bridges volunteer work with education and reflection on larger social issues. For the 17th consecutive year, the Phoenix group served at Andre House, a nonprofit organization sponsored by the Priests and Brothers of Holy Cross from the University of Notre Dame that serves the poor and homeless, and the Society of St. Vincent de Paul (SVdP), a Catholic lay organization.

University of Vermont, Burlington VT

  • Abbey Lussier of Mansfield Center, along with 40 teams and over 700 participants, has helped the University of Vermont's annual student-led fundraising event RALLYTHON raise a record-breaking $117,520.29 for the UVM Children's Hospital. RALLYTHON is a student-led yearlong fundraiser which culminates in a 12-hour dance marathon, signifying the average length of a nurse's shift at Vermont's local Children's Miracle Network Hospital. During RALLYTHON, which took place on Saturday, March 2, 2019, students heard stories from patient families treated at the UVM Children's Hospital and engaged with champions - current and past patients of the hospital, while fundraising, participating in games, and dancing until the final reveal their annual fundraising total. Abbey Lussier spent the year as a RALLYTHON Participant, gaining leadership, teamwork, and non-profit business experience while raising funds and awareness of Vermont's Children's Miracle Network Hospital, which treats and provides life-saving care to sick and injured kids in need. By the conclusion of this year's dance marathon, Abbey raised enough money to reach the "Dancer Goal"- a distinction given to participants who have fundraised between $100 - $249 over the course of the year.
