E.O. Smith Runner Captures Class MM Cross Country Individual Title

Jack Mattingly's winning effort enabled the Panthers to claim the runner-up spot in the Class MM competition for the second straight year.

MANCHESTER, CT — After placing second in last year's CIAC Class MM cross country race, Jack Mattingly of E.O. Smith High School captured an individual championship in the divisionals Saturday at Wickham Park. And for the second straight year, his efforts paced the Panthers in claiming the runner-up spot in Class MM.

Mattingly posted the smallest margin of victory in the 10 races conducted on "The Green Monster" course, finishing in 16:36 to edge runner-up Sean McCauley of East Lyme by six seconds.

Three other Panthers posted top 20 finishes: William Connolly (13th), Spencer Slayton (15th) and Gabriel Montoya (17th). E.O. Smith compiled 73 points, trailing only champion East Lyme's 43.

The Panther girls wound up fifth in Class L, paced by top 10 efforts from Jordan Stygar (sixth) and Gabriella Hernandez (eighth).
