Kitchen Germ Safari

Advance registration required ($30 or $25 for museum members) for this event, which is open to adults and children ages 10 and above (children must be accompanied by an adult.)

What really lurks in our kitchens? How concerned should we be about the "germs" we hear about in the media and what exactly is a "germ"? Do we really need to sanitize our kitchens to avoid illness in our families? Join a team of UConn microbiology researchers from UConn's MCB Department as you explore these questions in the classroom and in a hands-on lab. Test your hands for bacteria before and after ordinary hand washing, test food items and kitchen equipment, sponges, dishcloths, cutting boards and more. Find out how true the "5-second rule" and other common beliefs about kitchen cleanliness and microbes are. Then, discuss how your findings and what you have learned can help inform your daily choices and keep your family safe.
