The Community School of the Arts (CSA) at UConn’s Storrs campus offers a lively program of visual arts and music this summer. Full- and half-day programs are available weekly from June 25-August 3 for students entering grades 1-11. Students register in one-week blocks, for a half or whole day. Group classes and private lessons are available for the rest of the family.
Culture Vultures is the theme of this year’s Arts Explorers Camps, which are week-long programs at the Depot Campus in Storrs, CT. In Arts Explorers-Culture Vultures, students will explore how the daily life, history and beliefs of a country are reflected in its art. Projects will include drawing and painting, paper crafts, masks and working with recycled materials. All workshops are hands-on, involve both individual and group processes and build on the basic elements and principals of art. Family and friends are invited to an informal art exhibit at 4:00p.m.on the final day of each workshop week. Fees for each week are $340 (with the exception of the week of July 2-6) for a full day, from 9-4 or $180 for a half day, either 9-12 or 1-4. Free before and after care is also available.

Arts Explorers I: China, runs from June 25-29 and features general art in the morning session and clay in the afternoon. Students may create a Chinese scroll painting, dragon puppet or a ceramic vase.
Arts Explorers II: Exotic Animals runs from July 2-6 (closed July 4) with a fee of $280 for a whole day or $150 for a half day. Students will find out how different animals such as birds or leopards are used as decoration or as a symbol in the sculptures, masks and paintings of many cultures, and then make their own animal inspired artwork! Monday morning will include a clay activity.

Arts Explorers III: Medieval Art runs from July 9-13 and students will use pictures to tell a story in an illuminated letter drawing, emboss a knight’s armor into a metal sheet or create a crown of jewels as they learn about the art of the Dark Ages.
Arts Explorers IV: Countries in Africa runs from July 16-20 and will explore Africa, a large continent rich in art from ancient times to modern day. Students will make a mask, a musical instrument, a found object pin and decorate a ceramic bowl. This week features general art and clay in both the morning and afternoon session.
Arts Explorers V: Countries in Western Europe runs from July 23-27 and students will print a poster of a cat (or chat), make a collage like Matisse or pottery like Picasso, as they gain inspiration from the Impressionists.
Arts Explorers VI: Countries in the Americas runs from July 30-August 3. Students will find out what Canada, the United States and Central and South America have in common as they trace the origins and migrations of the people of these continents through stories, murals, earthworks and weavings. Also explored will be what everyday objects tell us about the geography, weather or family life of a culture.
CSA’s summer offerings also include Peter Pan!, a Musical Theater Workshop for students entering grades 1-6 from June 25-29, 9:00 a.m.– 4:00 p.m.; a Jewelry Workshop for students entering grades 5-11 from July 9-13, 9:00 a.m.-4:00 p.m.; Wheel Workshops for students entering grades 5-9 with two sessions: June 25-29 from 9:00 a.m.-12:00 p.m., and July 2-6 (no class July 4), from 9:00 a.m.-4:00 p.m., and a third Wheel Workshop for students entering grades 6-12 from July 23-July 27, 9:00 a.m.-4:00 p.m.
CSA also offers three Drawing & 2D Media Workshops for students ages 10-14 from July 16-20, and for ages 11-17 from July 23-27 and July 30-August 3, 9:00 a.m.- 4:00 p.m.
A new offering this year taught by the UConn’s Ballard Institute and Puppetry Workshop staff, is Toy Theater, where students entering grades 4-9 will create miniature puppet theaters from June 25-29.
Summer music programs include a Rock-n-Roll Workshop for students entering grades 7-10 on July 9-13 from 9:00 a.m.- 4:00 p.m. and a Week of Jazz: “Boot Camp” for instrumental jazz students entering grades 7-10 on July 30- August 3 from 9:00 a.m.-4:00 p.m. daily.
CSA's summer schedule also includes group pottery classes for adults and families, early childhood music classes, and private instrument lessons for all skill levels and ages.
