Happenings Down The Hill: 05/19 Celebrating The Return Of The Swifts

This information comes from Windham Town Manager Neal Beets's email newsletter Fast Facts For Friday (April 18, 2014), which is full of lots of fine and timely news and information.

"If you need an excuse to drink some of David Wollner's superb craft beer, how about the return of the chimney swifts?  On Monday, May 19, the Willimantic Brewing Company will host the Second Annual Chimney Swift Conservation Night.  Starting around 5:30 researchers from CT DEEP and UCONN will be enjoying a wonderful meal and specialty brews (such as "Flying Cigar Ale") as we witness the wonderful spectacle of hundreds, perhaps thousands, of chimney swifts tornadoing into two of the state's largest summer roosts.  Come see the Windham Town Hall roost and the Nathan Hale roost and learn why Willimantic is so important to chimney swifts -- and us!"

Peter Leeds has whiled away many an hour with David Wollner's beer and many a minute in front of Windham Town Hall and out on the farmland of Lebanon and Mansfield amazed by the swifts.  He has conversed with the young scientiists observing the swifts and has told them of other spots in the hill section that they roost.

Now, if only we can confirm some nesting pairs.  The swifts do prefer their privacy, you know.

Peter can be found on Facebook at Not Just The Sports Guy.
