Husky Pizza Open for Business at Storrs Center

Husky Pizza has reopened at 9 Dog Ln. after a five-month hiatus during the construction of its new digs at Storrs Center.

"We're finally back!," owner Ahmet Akkus said. "It feels great. It's even better than what I expected," he said.

Husky Pizza has been a staple in Mansfield for the pizza-loving college crowd and residents alike since 2005. When its former location at 1254 Storrs Rd. was slated for demolition to make way for the Storrs Center project, Akkus packed up shop and made the decision to move into a commercial space at Storrs Center.

He reopened Husky Pizza to customers' delight on Oct. 5.

"...Best pizza in Storrs," said one customer on the restaurant's Facebook page. "Yummy supper! Great pizza, wings and salad!," said another.

Akkus said he's just glad to be back doing what he loves - making his customers happy.

"It was a long five months," Akkus said. "It was tough in the beginning, but I made the right decision," he said.

The new space is bright and spacious with several tables, TVs and lots of University of Connecticut Huskies memorabilia - from framed team posters, to Husky logos to a blue and white-checked floor.

The restaurant's menu still has its tried and true favorites - pizza, salads, calzones and grinders - but Akkus said he plans to expand the menu to include breakfast and Doner Kebab - also known as gyro.

A grand re-opening is in the works for later this month, but in the meantime, customers can stop by to grab a slice and say 'hello' to some familiar faces.

"We're happy to be back and happy to serve the residents of Mansfield," Akkus said. "We've been away for too long!"

Husky Pizza is open Monday-Wednesday 11-2 a.m.; Friday-Saturday 11-3 a.m. and Sunday 12 p.m.-1 a.m.
