Mansfield officials have worked with UConn leaders to find a location for the new center, which was encouraged by UConnβs Student Government Association. State law necessitated that the Secretary of the State's Office approve the second proposed center.
"The most fundamental act of democracy is voting," Mansfield Mayor Antonia Moran said. "With 13,000 students and hundreds of local staff members working at the Storrs Campus, many of them eligible to vote for the first time, we want to help encourage their participation and make voting accessible. Early voting will help relieve the heavy traffic our four polls see during Presidential elections years. But students, and all eligible voters, should register online in advance to make their Early voting and Election Day in-person voting experience quick and easy.β
Same-day registration at the early voting centers and on Election Day is possible, but involves careful verification of residency, which takes extra time. Those who are registered in another town but can prove residency in Mansfield may transfer their registration to Mansfield before or on Election Day.
"This is a tremendous commitment on Mansfieldβs part to finance, stand up, and staff an additional Early Voting Center," Moran said. "However, with half of Mansfieldβs population located on the campus, we believe this is an appropriate move as part of the early voting initiative. We are eager to see the participation results."
The Mansfield Town Council approved the additional early voting center in late August.
