STORRS, CT — It's move-in time at the University of Connecticut for a student body coming from a record-high applicant pool.

Students started moving into UConn's residence halls this week preparation for the new academic year, which starts Monday. About half of the new first-year students at Storrs started moving in Thursday morning, with others scheduled to arrive Friday. Returning students will be moving back on Saturday and Sunday.

At UConn Stamford, the only regional campus with student housing, all students move in over the weekend.

Here are a few details about the incoming Class of 2027 and UConn's undergraduate population for the upcoming academic year:

  • About 5,800 incoming first-year students are joining UConn at its campuses statewide, including 4,200 at Storrs.
  • Overall, UConn will have about 24,000 undergraduates across all campuses this fall, including about 19,000 at Storrs. (The number doesn’t include graduate students and those in medical, dental, social work, and law programs).
  • About 12,300 students will live in UConn Storrs residence halls and university-run apartments this fall, and about 470 will live at Stamford student housing.
  • This year's freshmen come to UConn from 156 of the state’s 169 towns and cities. They also originate from 43 states and 92 countries.
  • About 30 percent of the new students are the first generation in their families to attend college.
  • Almost 150 were high school valedictorians or salutatorians.
  • About 47.5 percent of the incoming freshmen at Storrs are students of color, a new record.
  • Of those, almost 30 perfect come from races or ethnicities that are traditionally underrepresented in higher education. (Note: This category includes Black, Hispanic/Latino, Hawaiian/Pacific Islander, American Indian, and Alaska native students. It does not include Asian students, who are not underrepresented in higher education).
  • About 668 students are transferring to Storrs from other colleges and universities, plus about 230 are transferring from other institutions to the regional campuses.
  • More than 48,800 students applied for a spot at UConn in this year's record-high applicant pool of more than 48,800 high school seniors, including about 46,600 specifically seeking spots at the Storrs campus.
  • UConn’s overall undergraduate student body will comprise about 75 percent from Connecticut, in the same range as throughout the recent past and as expected to continue moving forward.
