As Practice Opens, a Look at E.O. Smith Fall State Championships

MANSFIELD, CT — Thursday marks the official opening of practice for fall high school sports, and the first day gives every team hope and optimism that perhaps a state championship is in the cards.

A total of 28 E.O. Smith teams have captured state titles in fall sports in the past:

• boys soccer (12): 1998 (LL), 1994 (LL), 1991 (LL), 1987 (LL), 1985 (LL), 1976 (LL), 1975 (M), 1972 (M), 1968 (M), 1967 (M), 1965 (M), 1962 (M)
• girls cross country (8): 2015 (L), 2008 (L), 2000 (MM), 1999 (MM), 1997 (MM/State Open), 1995 (MM), 1992 (M), 1990 (M)
• boys cross country (4): 2014 (MM), 1986 (SS), 1980 (M), 1978 (M)
• girls soccer (2): 1981 (open), 1980 (open)
• field hockey (2): 1977 (M), 1976 (M)
