STORRS, CT – “Magnificent.” – London Financial Times
Connecticut Repertory Theatre continues its 2022-2023 season with Ariel Dorfman’s searing drama, Death and the Maiden. The play previews March 23 and runs March 24 – April 2 in the Studio Theatre in the UConn Fine Arts Complex.
Set in an unnamed country emerging from a totalitarian dictatorship, Dorfman’s white-knuckle thriller explores the aftereffects of repression on the hearts and souls of those who lived through persecution and terror. Former political prisoner Paulina’s delicate peace shatters when her husband unknowingly brings home the man she believes tortured and raped her more than 20 years earlier. Winner of the 1992 Olivier Award for Best Play, Death and The Maiden features Samantha Seawolf, Paul Flores and Alex Winnick and is directed by Gary M. English.

“ A terrifying moral thriller which combines brilliant theatricality with clear thought and fierce compassion.” – London Sunday Times

Director Gary M. English, Distinguished Professor of Drama, teaches theatre and human rights at UConn and is an affiliate faculty member of the Human Rights Institute. “There is a difference,” says English, “between doing right and having a right. The nature of human rights often places obligations on others, including the State. But a State may know what the right thing to do is, but still denies a victim's right, out of the force of some necessity. Enforced reconciliation without meaningful accountability then becomes just another form of oppression.”
