Thousands Of Students Heading To Campus On UConn's Move-In Weekend

UConn will have about 24,900 undergraduates across all campuses this fall. Here's a look at the student population by the numbers.

STORRS, CT — University of Connecticut students have Friday began moving into residence halls in preparation for the new academic year, which starts Monday.

About half of the first-year students at Storrs started moving in during the morning hours on Thursday, with others scheduled to arrive Friday.

Returning students move back to campus on Saturday and Sunday.

Here is the rundown on the incoming Class of 2028 and UConn’s undergraduate population for the upcoming academic year:

  • About 6,500 incoming first-year students are joining UConn at its campuses statewide, including 4,500 at Storrs and the rest at the campuses in Stamford, Hartford, Waterbury, and Avery Point.
  • It's UConn’s largest freshman class ever, and comes after a record-setting year of receiving about 60,000 applications from around the world.
  • Overall, UConn will have about 24,900 undergraduates across all campuses this fall, including about 19,800 at Storrs. The number does not include graduate students and those in medical, dental, and law programs.
  • About 13,300 students will live in UConn Storrs residence halls and university-run apartments this fall, including 657 in the newly opened Connecticut Hall near Mirror Lake.
  • This year’s freshmen come to UConn from 156 of the state’s 169 towns and cities. They also originate from 43 states and 92 countries.
  • UConn Stamford’s growth has been particularly noteworthy: Originally, about 800 first-time students were expected there this semester. However, interest was so strong that the campus is the new home to almost 1,000 first-time students.
  • About 677 students will live at Stamford student housing, an increase from 480 last year with the addition of more units in buildings near the campus.
  • About 35 percent of UConn’s new students at Storrs are the first generation in their families to attend college, and almost 150 were high school valedictorians or salutatorians.
  • About 46 percent of the incoming freshmen at Storrs are students of color. Of those, about 27 percent come from races or ethnicities that are traditionally underrepresented in higher education. The category refers to includes Black, Hispanic/Latino, Hawaiian/Pacific Islander, American Indian, and Alaska native students. It does not include Asian students, who are not "underrepresented in higher ed," UConn officials said.
