STORRS, CT — The University of Connecticut could be using the XL Center in Hartford for more than a few basketball games.

The State Bond Commission on Dec. 15 is slated to decide on a $5 million request to lease space for a research innovation center in the XL Center that was previously used by the University of St. Joseph for its pharmacy school until 2022.

Specifics of the space's interior design and renovations and other details are being developed, and will be included when the item is brought to the UConn Board of Trustees for its review and vote in 2024, school officials said.

"UConn’s downtown Hartford campus has been a vibrant center of learning, service, and community since it opened in 2017, and we are excited about the opportunity to bring that same energy to the XL Center space," UConn Spokeswoman Stephanie Reitz said.
