Wesleyan University had the fifth-highest number of reports at 37 and second highest for reports per 1,000 students.

The top five are:

  • Brown: 43
  • UConn: 43
  • Dartmouth College: 42
  • Wesleyan University: 37
  • University of Virginia: 35

Wesleyan offers 24/7 on-call counseling and psychological services for individual therapy and support groups. Reports of sexual assault can be reported to a school Title IX investigator, the Middletown Police Department or both. Reports can be made anonymously, but they can’t be investigated.

A Wesleyan spokesperson couldn't be reached for comment Tuesday.

Public safety at the school can provide rides to nearby Middlesex Hospital if a student wants to have an evidence collection kit administered.

A high number of reports doesn’t necessarily mean that more rapes are occurring at a school. Baylor had four reported rapes, but the school’s president was demoted and its football coach fired after an investigation found the school didn’t respond effectively to sexual assault accusations against football players, according to the Washington Post.

The issue of college rape has come into the spotlight once again after Stanford student Brock Allen Turner was convicted on three felony counts: rape of an unconscious person, digital penetration with an unconscious person and assault with the intent to commit rape.

The National Institute of Justice Bureau of Justice Statistics estimates that less than 5 percent of completed or attempted rapes against college women are reported to law enforcement.

Nearly 5 percent of all college women are victimized during any college year, according to the Bureau of Justice Statistics.

About two-thirds of reported completed rapes occur off campus and one-third on campus.
