UConn to Renovate Library in $20M Project

UConn officials offered a look at the Homer Babbidge Library project at Wednesday's trustees meeting.

STORRS, CT — University of Connecticut officials on Wednesday offered a glimpse of a project to renovate the Homer Babbidge Library that could cost as much as $20 million.

The Board of Trustees adopted a $1.85 million planning budget at its meeting Wednesday. The project is scheduled for completion in 2020 at a final cost of between $16 million and $20 million, according to a project outline.

The library was constructed in 1978 and followed the "traditional library model" for the times, UConn officials said. That means the emphasis was on "printed circulated collections," university officials said.

The renovations will make adjustments for "innovation, social media and technology-enhanced construction," according to a project outline. Renovations will take place within the building's existing footprint and will be phased-in over a three-year period so the library can remain operational, according to a project outline.

The library's exterior is not being modified, according to a project outline.
