UConn's 16th President: The Particulars
A look at the particulars of Thomas Katsouleas' appointment as the 16th University of Connecticut president.

STORRS, CT — Thomas C. Katsouleas on Tuesday was officially named the 16th president of the University of Connecticut. The UConn Board of Trustees endorsed his appointment in an unanimous vote on Tuesday, capping a six-month national search.
Here is a look at the particulars:
- Background: Leading plasma scientist and engineer
- Current position: Executive vice president/provost, University of Virginia
- Start date: Aug. 1
- Term of contract: 5 years
- Status upon hiring: Tenured
- Base salary: $525,000
- Compensation cap: $675,000, plus car allowance, plus housing arrangements
- Automatic annual increase in base salary: 3 percent
- Annual performance-based incentive potential: $50,000
- Annual deferred compensation credited at end of each contract year: $75,000
- Deferred payment payable at end of 5-year term: $125,000
- Car allowance (including repairs, insurance and
maintenance): $1,250 per month - Housing: Oak Hill residence

In his spare time, Katsouleas enjoys sailing, swimming, surfing, water skiing and other water sports. The former ocean lifeguard has jokingly noted that he competed "briefly, proudly and ingloriously" as a student athlete playing water polo during his college days.

He’s also been known at past universities to scoot across campus on his personalized skateboard, explore the surroundings by motorcycle, and is as comfortable discussing plasma physics as he is catching a wave.
Katsoulas will be spending time in Connecticut in the coming months as president designate to prepare for his new job, working with outgoing president Susan Herbst and others on the transition.
