STORRS, CT — The University of Connecticut's Freitas Ice Forum has taken a major step toward being converted into the new home of the Husky volleyball program.

The UConn Board of Trustees Wednesday approved the final budget of $2.5 million for the project. The money will be coming from gift funds, according to the resolution. The typical three-stage budget approval process was waived to allow "renovation to proceed" quickly after bids have been received and evaluated for conformance with the project scope and budget, according to the resolution.

The Mark Freitas Ice Forum opened in the fall of 1998. Prior to the opening of the Toscano
Family Ice Forum, the facility was the home of the Husky men's and women's ice hockey teams. This project will renovate the facility to house the women's volleyball team, according to the plans.

Phase 1 will include the decommissioning of the ice system, demolition of the existing dasher boards and bleachers. The work will then progress to the conversion, officials said.
