UConn's Khan Wins PGA Minority Collegiate Tourney

PORT ST. LUCIE, FL — University of Connecticut sophomore Nabeel Khan shot the the best individual round of the 2017 PGA Minority Collegiate Golf Championship when it mattered.

Holding a three-shot lead heading into Sunday’s final round, Khan, from Westerville, OH, fired a 4-under par 68 to win the men’s individual championship by five shots over runner-up Siyan Liu of Palm Beach Atlantic University, who was the tourney’s defending champion.

Khan’s 8-under 71-79-68-208 topped the 25-player field at the PGA Golf Club at Port St. Lucie.

Khan, started on the 10th hole Sunday and began his final round with three birdies on his first four holes.

He finished the round with seven birdies and three bogeys.

Khan led the 54-hole tournament with 14 birdies and was second in pars with 34. He played 48 of the holes in par or better.

The PGA Minority Collegiate Golf Championship is a 54-hole, stroke-play championship consisting of four team divisions – NCAA Men’s Division I, Men’s Division II, Men’s NAIA, and an overall Women’s Division.

The tourney includes an individual invitational competition for minority men and women players who are listed on the roster of their college team.

The men’s and women’s teams of Bethune-Cookman University captured the team titles of the tourney, while Tiana Jones of Maryland-Eastern Shore was the individual women’s titlist.

This year marks the 31st year of the Minority Collegiate Golf Championship. Participants must be in one of the ethnic origins listed: African-American, Hispanic-American, Middle Eastern/North African, Native or Alaskan American, Asian or Pacific Island American.

On July 5, the Golf Channel will air a one-hour recap program, highlighting the championship and its participants.
