UConn's Stewart Details Personal Abuse in Moving Blog Post

Breanna Stewart opened up about enduring sexual abuse as a child on a Monday blog post.

STORRS, CT — Former UConn basketball great and current Seattle Storm star Breanna Stewart on Monday detailed a horrific story of personal sexual abuse in a moving blog post.

The post appeared on The Players Tribune, a site that allows professional athletes to post personal blogs for fans to see.

The blog post was titled, "Me Too."

"I don't talk about my feelings much - so this is uncomfortable," she said.

She was 9 when it all started at a relative's house and basketball practice was an outlet, she wrote.

"I remember what he smelled like ... Cigarettes and dirt ... Kind of metallic, too," Stewart wrote. "He was a construction worker and he smoked. You can’t really wash those smells off."

She also details how, when 11, she woke up her mom at 3 a.m. one night to tell her what had been going on. She remembers talking to the police about it.

He was arrested, but Stewart said describing it makes her numb.

"Even though I play in front of thousands of people or talk to reporters all the time, I have quiet moments every day that no one sees," she wrote. She added, however, she can "finally sleep."

UConn hoops administrators sent out a supportive Tweet by posting, "Once again showing the courage that is typical of her. "If you are being abused, tell somebody ... Help is there."
